GRATEFUL – Northern Lights Photo Print
Black Friday 2024
How to find a perfect spot for aurora watching is something I’m constantly thinking about. The perfect location for aurora watching has to be far from light pollution, it has to have a view to the north without anything blocking it, like buildings, trees or hills and it should look good from a photography standpoint.
On Friday October 23 2020 I went to such a place. I had arranged for an aurora safari with my aurora watching students and we went to the beautiful Fäboda beach in Jakobstad, Finland. The place is a 10 minute drive from the town of Jakobstad but it’s dark enough for aurora photography.
You look to the north when looking straight towards the sea where the sky meets the water. You simply can’t have a better view if you want to see the northern lights.
We had to wait for more than three hours before the aurora appeared. At 11:15 pm we started seeing a faint green arch and suddenly it bursted out in colours and moving shapes. We all cheered of joy!
The aurora was fantastic during the most active part, which lasted for half an hour before it leveled down. To my surprise, my best shots were taken a couple of hours later when the aurora did not move wildly anymore and its vivid color spectrum was limited to green.
That’s when I discovered this formation of rocks with the delicate curved waterline leading to it. The composition felt perfect!
Occasionally you could see more distinct shapes moving beneath it. But everything in my photos became two-colored. Green and black. Apart from my yellow lamp light, of course.
As I was driving home at 2 am I felt so grateful to live in a place where the northern lights can be seen and where I’m also close to darknes and open spaces with beautiful nature.
